Dear Editor:

As a Jewish writer living in Canada, I have often felt ashamed and appalled by the events in Israel. However, it's easy to detach oneself and say, " there's nothing I can do, this is an issue for world leaders to solve. "

One can no longer be detached or indifferent when it hits home. This week, I made personal contact with journalist, Kawther Salam. She is a credentialed journalist who lives under brutal, hateful conditions in Hebron. Reading her story has encouraged me to take personal action; to try and bring her situation to international attention. Every day, Ms Salam is subjected to harassment, life without proper amenities and violence. She now seeks to travel to Europe for much-needed medical treatment and apparently there is some doubt as to whether she will be allowed to travel through Ben Gurion Airport, or not.

I trust this woman's personal story which can be accessed at www.gush-shalom.org will bring it " home " to others as it has for me.

Regards,

Ilanna Mandel, MA, RRP
