Actions against war crimes

Gush Shalom has sent a letter of warning to Colonel Yair Golan,
commander of the "Nahal" Brigade

"The actions of the units under your command, during the occupation of Tamun (a village in the west bank), were registered in a legal file, and might be used, in the future, in an Israeli or International war crimes tribunal." Text of the letter:

On the 7th. of February 2002, forces under your command invaded Palestinian controlled territory in the area of Nablus, and occupied the village of Tamun. during the occupation, extensive damage was caused to Palestinian property, and some 20 Palestinians were wounded from fire of soldiers under your command, amongst them, the 70 years old Imam of Tamun, who was would seriously tear gas granades. These acts were done by IDF forces under your command and responsibility, without you acting to prevent them.

On the 10th of February, 2002, on the forth day of this invasion to Tamun, you were interviewed in the B channel of the Israeli radio, you said clearly that the forces under your command did not succeed in capturing the "wanted persons" they were searching for, but they will continue the occupation of the village, in order to harasse the inhabitants, and "Teach them a lesson, not to harbour terrorists" , as you have put it. by saying this, you admit directly to committing collective punishment of civilian population, In order to terrorize and intimidate them. This consists a grave breach of International law, and of the 4th. Geneva convention, to which the state of Israel is a signatory.

We are Israeli citizens, deeply concerned by the grave consequence for all Israelis, by the amplification of hatred and frustration, brought about by these actions. we are not willing to turn a blind eye to these grave actions, caried out by Israeli officers, In our name, and on our behalf.

Therefore, your words on the Israeli radio, were recorded, and might be brought as evidence before an Israeli or International war crime tribunal.
