CUT OFF THE BLOCKADE! - an action report “Put on the light! Cut off the blockade!” – this cry by a hundred protesters was heard in a spontaneous demonstration that took place on Tuesday (18.11) opposite the entrance of the Ministry of Defense in Tel-Aviv, in protest against the stoppage of supplies to the Gaza Strip, which also led to the cutting off of electricity. The cease-fire along the Gaza Strip was violated several times in the last few days by the Israeli army, under the command of Ehud Barak, who is fighting for his political life as Minister of Defense and chief of the Labor Party. The protest demonstration was called on very short notice in the middle of a working day by Gush Shalom, the Women’s coalition for Peace, Hadash and the Anarchists Against the Wall. When the protesters arrived at the usual place reserved for protests opposite the Defense Ministry, they found that the police had decided to confine them to a fenced-in narrow strip of five meters, far from the street. The reason became soon apparent: at the same time a cocktail party was to take place in a neighboring garden for the thousands of delegates of Jewish communities in the USA. The demonstrators protested against this decision and burst through the barricades. At this stage, two protesters were arrested. The others, carrying posters and lighted candles, reformed the protest opposite the entrance to the cocktail party, shouting their slogans in English. The organizers of the reception found a solution: they erected a wall of huge screens, like those used for cinema projections, in order to block the view of the notables. Among the protesters was Na’ama Ben-Bassat from Ein-Habassor village, a neighbor of the Gaza Strip, who had come especially in order to protest against the violation of the cease-fire and to demand its immediate renewal.
