The Green Line and the schoolbooks

By Israeli and international law alike, the Green Line is Israel’s border. It is not the act of the Education Minister which is 'political', but rather the situation in which Israeli pupils have been presented with false maps depicting an occupied territory as if it were part of Israel so that settlement and annexation plans can be promoted.

Gush Shalom: Education Minister Tamir ended the situation where Israeli children don’t know the borders of their own country.

“The Green Line is the border of the State of Israel, under Israeli and International Law alike. No Israeli government, not even the most right-wing, has ever contemplated annexation of the Occupied Territories. The Green Line was and remains the border dividing the sovereign territory of the State of Israel and an occupied territory held under military rule. Until now, Israel has been the only country in the world where children can undergo full twelve years of study in state schools without having ever learned what the borders of their country are and then pass on with that ignorance into compulsory military service. This is the absurd situation which Education Minister Yuli Tamir intends to set right, and for that she deserves praise” says the Gush Shalom movement. “It is not the act of the Education Minister which is political, but rather the situation in which Israeli pupils have been presented with false maps depicting an occupied territory as if it were part of Israel so that settlement and annexation plans can be promoted”.
