Prime Minister Netanyahu has managed to surpass his own records of cynicism, cheating and sheer chutzpah. The idea of approving wholesale the construction of hundreds of houses in the settlements before announcing a "construction freeze" is reminiscent of a fireman who before putting out a fire is pouring on it several barrels of gasoline. Not only is Netanyahu under pressure by the settlers and by the extreme right within his own party and his own cabinet . He himself does not want to freeze settlement construction, and certainly he does not wish to enter into series negotiations which would lead to the end of the occupation and the actual creation of a Palestinian state. His whole intention is to produce an endless stream of lip-service, and to go on cheating the Government of the United States and the international and Israeli public opinion.
