The escalation and bloodshed of the past twenty-four hours, the killing of an Israeli and five Palestinians, could have been prevented. It was very possible to prevent the killing in Kibbutz Kfar Aza, the retaliation in Rafah and Han Yunes and the counter-retaliation in Sderot. All that was needed was to accept at last the cease-fire proposal, formulated weeks ago by the Egyptian mediators, which had received the signatures of Hamas and the 12 smaller militias active in the Gaza Strip. All that is needed is the adherence of the Government of Israel. But with a Prime Minister struggling for political survival in face of police investigation, a Foreign Minister manoeuvring to replace him and a Defence Minister and generals who are determined to continue provocations and military adventures and prevent any chance for calm, the inhabitants of the Negev seem doomed to continue to be vulnerable targets, along with their neighbours across the Gaza border.
